The Fundamentals of Downward Facing Dog

Downward Facing Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana, in Sanskrit), one of the poses we frequently do in a yoga class. However, is not a pose that is commonly taught. So it’s especially important for us to pay attention to how we do this pose.

In this workshop, we will break down this pose into smaller parts, so that we can understand what each part is supposed to do, and then we’ll put them back together to make the whole pose.

We’ll talk about anatomy (don’t worry, I will keep it simple), look at alignment, use of props, and related poses as we work to find our Down Dogs.

We will look at:

  • Major challenges such as tight hamstrings, overly mobile spine and hyperextended arms
  • Common tendencies to dump weight on the shoulder and wrist joints
  • Ways to protect the hands to avoid wrist pain and injury
  • Modifications for safety and relaxation
  • How to build BOTH strength and flexibility in the shoulders
  • Everything You’ve Wanted to Know About Downward Facing Dog But Were Afraid To Ask (to which I may or may not know the answer)

If you have never been to a yoga workshop before, doing a 2.5-hour yoga class might seem like very long time. Well, the good news is that I’ll be talking quite a bit.  We will try out different poses, partner work, laugh a lot, and hopefully learn some new things that you can practice the next time you are in Downward Facing Dog pose. Sounds good?

Who
This is better suited to students who have some prior yoga experience, so you know what are the challenges you face in this, and we can address them. Feel free to ask your friends along!

Props
The studio will have props, but if you have your own straps and/or blocks, feel free to bring them. Each participant will have ONE towel to be used either during the workshop (could get sweaty) or for showering.
